“Although the figures indicate a clear winner, the reality is that the companies behind the operating systems have a challenge to build relevance in all segments,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

“Apple is currently the best represented in all different categories while 90 percent of Android sales coming from the smartphone market and 85 percent of the sales of Windows on the PC market place.”

PC market

The same survey shows that the PC market for laptops and desktops in 2013 and 2014 again gets hit hard. This year, the PC market shrink by 10 percent. If ‘ultra mobiles’ are included, it is a decrease of more than 7 percent.
