The Philips 55PUS8809 is one of the first TVs that runs on Android, and of course we are very curious how this works. We received a review copy of this 55 inch 4K TV and it started working, Android has added value in a device in the Philips 8800 series?
Philips 55PUS8809
The Philips 55PUS8809 is one of the products from the 8800 series from Philips and runs on Android. This is one of the first television programs running on this operating system, but can be also want to know the Smart TV apps used. A beautiful combination and together with the 4K screen and stylish design I looked forward to the review period of the Philips 55PUS8809. Precisely because this is one of the first TVs on Android, this is my first review of such a device, nice! What I’m particularly curious about is whether Android really offers added value and there I found out now!
Design
The design of the Philips 55PUS8809 is stylish and very tight. An aluminum border around the screen and two subtle feet to the bottom of this TV provide direct a classy look. Partly because of this minimalist looks and thickness of 3.8 cm it looks like a slim whole, something that can be like me. Despite the thickness, it is a striking device, they always said something about it when visitors came over the floor. Nice detail is the webcam automatically slide out from under the Philips logo at the bottom of the device, it can also be retracted easily again (manual) and is therefore not in the way.
Ambilight
Now I own a (older) Philips Ambilight TV which is still projected on the wall via two tubes on the side, self Philips 55PUS8809 is a relief that matter. The Ambilight is much more visible and also adds something to viewing content on this device. The color on the wall behind the TV is the experience slightly more intense and individual LEDs on the rear cover to the Ambilight pleasant experience
Android
Leave I begin to report that we tested a developer version of the software which have some bugs in sat inquiry teaches us that these are not present in the stable versions of the software. Therefore, we have Android itself and most functions can test more than enough.
On the Philips 55PUS8809 running Android, an interesting choice of Philips, because this is not yet the official Android TV version is that has been announced. This TV runs on a customized version of Android based on Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). One of the biggest advantages of Android on a TV are of course the apps, they must offer added value. There is 2.7 GB of free space to install apps and games, this should be more than enough but if you’re planning to go quite gaming this could be a limiting factor as many graphics need to be downloaded.
This TV will be on the device itself is not Android 5.0 (not the official version of Android TV) received, but will be from 2015 or an external ultra HD media player comes on Android 5.0 that provides all the features of this latest Android version. This means that will support the mouse pointer disappear, unfortunately. The big difference with Android TV will mainly be in the interface, apps and content centrally stand here and looks visually much more attractive. It is also easier for developers to create apps for Android TV, or it can also run on the Jelly Bean version (without external media player) is not entirely clear.
Android TV interface
Apps are of course standard on a smart TV today and this is also the case with the 55PUS8809. These can be supplemented by apps from the Play Store, which is installed by default on the TV. As a result, many additional features and functionality to add some. Unfortunately, not all apps available, but that is not something the manufacturer can do something about it. Developers should specify explicit, these are suitable for screens and controls like on a TV. Therefore it could be that apps are not displayed for a search in the Play Store. An example is Hangouts. It is simply not possible for the app to use on this Android TV, Skype contrast works simply and is very convenient and especially nice with the integrated webcam.
The real killer app for TVs I have not found, but there are many apps that interesting, such as RTL XL and Uitzendinggemist, Plex, Evernote, Office, IMDB and lake. One of the most brilliant apps for the Android TV thing you have absolutely nothing has to be the torch, it makes the white screen … Wherever I am impressed is gaming on the big screen, possibly with a controller but also by remote control.
Gaming
The game possibilities are therefore one of the advertised features of this TV, where there is also a game controller connected to so that the experience can come closer to a console. Do not have a controller, no problem, even with the remote control it is possible to play games.
As indicated earlier, not all apps suitable for large screens and this also applies to games, developers must explicitly indicate . However, it is an interesting experience. As a non-gamer was still a small world for me, especially since games I can normally be played on a big screen on my smartphone or tablet play. The nice thing is then even that can be already purchased games played directly on TV provided logged into the same Google Account. The number of games is relatively large, the Play Store is of course an extensive collection available that contains more titles daily and regrettably also be relatively inexpensive. Gaming on a TV with Android, I see it down.
With the future support for OnLive, the gaming in the cloud on this Android TVs even more interesting are the possibilities as practically endless.
Remote
The remote control for this TV can be described with one word: amazing. He is comfortable in the hand, but has the advantage that there is a full QWERTY keyboard is present on the back. This, in combination with the arrow keys next to it is actually sufficient to operate all smart features. But often it is easy to have for example, a mouse, and this is also built into the remote control. Once you point the front of the TV and then briefly moves, a cursor appears on the screen and all the apps and functions can be controlled with a mouse pointer if there is support. For the less smart functions, there is also a ‘regular’ remote available at the front, as you would expect with any TV. This remote has surprised me very positively.
If your well-thought-out remote control is not at hand, then the TV may also operate via an app on your smartphone.
Specs
Of course we also measure just the geek in us happy with some specs of 55PUS8809. Set The screen has a 4K resolution and a size of 55 inches (139cm) with a brightness of 450 cd / m². Furthermore, we see 1000 Hz PMR Ultra, three-sided Ambilight and hexacore processor that should things powering. At its sound is 30 watts RMS available (2×15). There are also 4 HDMI, 1 component, 1 scart and 3 USB ports available. Will connect to the Internet via a WiFi N and there is support for two CI + modules.
Because of the specifications provides the TV smooth performance when the unit has been started there are few delays noticeable, with a good response to the operation.
Conclusion
My first experience with the Philips 55PUS8809 on Android, and actually are actually the first TV with this operating system from Google was certainly interesting. The added value of Android lies in the large number of apps, but gaming is an interesting activity for televisions that out-of-the-box can be started. The Philips TV itself has a very good image quality, though this will, as with other 4K TVs, yet not supported long anywhere. Are you looking for a new TV and your budget is sufficient, then this is definitely an option, but keep in mind that the update will go to 5.0 for an external media player.
There is one drawback I have the entire test period, my Chromecast not used …
