Last week a blog of my hand because I had an idea or vision of how Microsoft’s smartphone market even touch it with Windows 10. This blog has been read pretty well thanks! Today again a blog, but this time not with an idea or a vision but because I am angry, angry at Google. I’m angry at Google because they have announced that they will not bring security updates for Android 4.3, thus make them a whopping 930 million units in the cold. It can not, you can not have so much shit to your users. I appeal to Google’s slogan; “do not be evil”
What’s going on?
There’s been a while back a vulnerability found in the engine of the Android browser used in Android 4.3 and all previous versions. This engine ensures that all web pages and web tools are properly loaded in the browser, but also in applications that use a so-called webview. What is important to know is that an enormous amount of apps make use of here. In Android 4.4, Google has this engine replaced by a new variant, hence the vulnerability does not occur here.
However, Google has now announced that it will release a patch to seal the leak. The reason that Google uses is that it is only the last two Android versions provide patches, which equates to Android 5.0 and Android 4.4. Android 4.3 is therefore outside the boat, that while this version is just not true and a half years ago that users update request is therefore not an unreasonable requirement. Google requires manufacturers themselves that they have the ir smartphones at least 1.5 years with updates.
The demands of companies like Apple and Microsoft even they close security holes in their operating systems within 90 days because then goes on to Google publication of the leak with all its consequences. Google so measure clearly a double standard when it comes to the development of software updates by third parties or when it has to do that yourself.
Moreover, the story of the version numbers is not Google’s only defense against the release of the update. The company also indicates that it is more than 5 million lines of code where every month more than 1,000 changes to be made and that it is simply too much work is to develop an update there. I do not dispute that it is not much work to make an update or that it is not awkward or difficult chore. I refer in this case just for Microsoft, which company is also able to develop updates for Windows that leaks are sealed and Windows consists of much more than 5 million lines of code.
Actually, all excuses that Google is trying to argue not to have to update all make pretty worthless. The company late namely 930 million units in the cold, which are at least 500 million unique users, 500 million is a half billion and more than 7 percent of the total world population, who walk around with a device with a substantial vulnerability.
The real reason why Google makes no update is in fact a very different, imagine that the company have developed a patch for Android 4.3, it is still questionable how many aircraft will be equipped with this patch. All smartphone manufacturers must namely to test this patch and adjust where needed so that is suitable for their Android smartphones, then the patch by the providers to be tested and that can only then rolled. Since manufacturers only 1.5 years their devices have to provide Android updates, chances are that they let this update, which Google all the work to make a patch more or less would not do anything.
The real problem
The problem is much deeper, the problem is with the Android fragmentation and adjustments manufacturers. Google chooses to Android in a very high pace by developing so that the operating system is better and more suitable for more applications. Appear approximately every nine months an update. As has recently added support for cars, televisions and wearables. In addition, Google has chosen to Android manufacturers to provide a lot of freedom in how they adapt Android. These rules are simply too smooth and that makes deploying updates has become a painfully slow and complex process.
Many manufacturers build Android namely to complete with their own applications and designs, with the result that they do this every time have to do it again when a new Android version of security update is available and if the hardware of their smartphones vastly different that they should also do per unit. That takes quite a lot of time and it is also made balancing every time we go a device may or may not provide an update.
In my view, Google must do two things, first just make that update and help manufacturers to that update as soon as possible to get to the end user and not 930 million units to stand in the cold. If your slogan “Do not be evil” then I also keep you on when appropriate.
In addition, Google has to adjust the conditions of Android manufacturers. They all need to take an example from HTC and maybe even a few steps further. HTC has chosen to stop a large part of the adjustments they make to Android in separate applications. This allows them to Android updates make fairly quickly because they only have to do little adjustments, most end up sitting down in separate applications running on top of Android and not Android.
In addition, HTC can update the components that it has put into separate applications from the Play Store. For example, a camera or gallery app. The complete launcher (home screen) and application list can loose apps are running on top of Android.
If Google mandatory that all adjustments in separate applications must be on top of Android, Google may update process of the Android core account for and updates can be deployed faster and users can always have the latest Android version. All the manufacturers have to do is keep their apps and ensure that they are compatible with the latest Android version. There remains a small glitch open regarding hardware support and drivers, but there is probably to find a solution. That’s Microsoft succeeded with Windows
So Google:. Do not be evil and go that leak and make sure you get your act together. Further, manufacturers will not be put at further if the adjustments in Android to tires, but it makes for a more secure operating system that can be easily fitted with updates. I also think that the adjustment possibilities loose apps offer not much to do under the current need for adjustments. Also that Google can arrange through a good software development kit (SDK).
