Google and Motorola after there are still many manufacturers that their devices with a skin that in more or less matches the interface of Android. This is for several reasons a bad thing.
Same platform, different look
Last week I made the switch from Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge to the Motorola Moto X Style. Both devices are currently running on Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop), but are nevertheless very different. And I’m not talking about appearance, but about the interface. Where the unit of Motorola runs on a ‘pure’ version of Android, so virtually no extra software and changes to the interface, is that the flagship of Samsung or otherwise. The Galaxy S6 Edge uses TouchWiz Android skin that Samsung since 2010 flour evert and that includes other menus, icons, features and apps with it.
Samsung tries in the field of software different from other manufacturers, and would prefer that users Google apps like Calendar, Fit and Play Store redeem for own services as S Planning, Health and Galaxy S Apps. Samsung is not the only Android which provides a skin: even LG, HTC, Sony, Asus and Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei Honor and Xiaomi try this way to “improve” Google’s operating system. That’s from a business perspective understandable, but detrimental to both users and the Android platform.
The disadvantages of Android Skin
In practice, adhere more disadvantages than advantages to such ‘ n geskinde version of Android. First, take all these extra apps and system software then up more space when a manufacturer would choose a ‘bare’ of the operating system. When the aforementioned Galaxy S6 Edge comes standard example, one third of the storage occupied by the system and apps from Samsung, which can not be removed in many cases. The Motorola Moto X Style’s share system much lower, allowing users to have more than three quarters of the storage space. Moreover, the storage space of the device is expandable, which is not possible with the S6 Edge
The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua makes this area may be even more colorful. At the 8GB model is out of the box a paltry 1,26GB available to the user. The store is indeed expanding with a memory card, but since some apps (think widgets and system tools) do not wish to move, that is only a small consolation. Do you want to install their own apps, take photos and download media, you run quickly against limitations.
Delays and slow updates
Android skins not only waste a lot of space; but also cause delays. TouchWiz is notorious for the high RAM usage, which is recognized by Samsung, but never really solved. So it is that high-end devices such as the S6 and S6 Edge despite 3GB of RAM and a fast chipset still regularly falter. That is less true of the flagships of example, LG and HTC, but cheaper models from these manufacturers also feel not always smooth. . While Motorola with Moto Moto E and G shows that Android also less powerful hardware to run smoothly
But still the biggest drawback Android skins is that they contribute to one of the biggest problems of the platform: fragmentation. The update process on Android, for various reasons, complicated and difficult because manufacturers have the ability to make adjustments and external apps to deliver them. Each skin has to be adapted to the system and be updated for each new firmware version. When that is done is determined which aircraft – including on the basis of the chipset -. Coped with the new Android version
Every Android skin must be adapted to the system
The update process is long and costly, allowing manufacturers sometimes decide to stop supporting a device. Especially manufacturers of budget devices such as Huawei and Acer, are guilty. Buyers often can not count on more than one update, so they can not all apps use over time and risk, as vulnerabilities are not closed. For developers, it is frustrating to see so many people still use an older Android version, allowing them to be restricted in the functions they can implement in their app.
Android is deteriorating
Android in recent years faster, safer and more beautiful. Due to the Material Design, introduced with Android Lollipop, the system looks a lot tighter and more mature. In addition, Google has in recent years worked hard to make Android more flexible working, even on less powerful hardware. By default, the OS everything you need in principle, an excellent browser and search engine to a calendar and camera app that has always gotten better lately.
The need to deliver with an Android skin, is discarded. Yet manufacturers think differently, which is also detrimental to the appearance of Android. Thus TouchWiz labeled by many as childlike and confusing, while the EMUI-skin on devices from Huawei Honor and very little is left of Android as Google intended. Icons and backgrounds are ugly, an app-drawer missing, the custom alert notifications panel is unclear and spelling errors in the interface are numerous. Give us stock-Android.
Get rid Android skins
Focus on innovation where users have something to
Understandably, manufacturers are trying to differentiate themselves from the competition with its own Android skins. If the past year has demonstrated anything, it is that manufacturers are searching for some news on the smartphone market. For sharper displays, faster chipsets and more RAM walk indeed fewer consumers warm.
But what we are concerned, the co-delivery of an Android skin is not the answer. Skins are often ugly, unnecessarily take up much space, cause delays and do not contribute to reducing the fragmentation of Android. Manufacturers would do well to focus on innovations that users really have anything like a valbestendige housing, longer battery life and – if they still want to tinker with the software – more options to ensure your privacy
