In older test versions of Canonical’s mobile operating system, the Ubuntu environment started when Android was booted. This was done through a chroot command in userland environment of Android. Ubuntu Touch was therefore described by some developers as just a shell on top of the Android kernel, something many mobile phone manufacturers do.
In the latest test images of Ubuntu Touch this model is significantly changed. The operating system itself starts now, and Android within a so-lxc containter a virtualized environment is started. Touch the Ubuntu developers call the changes a “container flip ‘and argue that the new test images are a harbinger of the final Ubuntu Touch architecture. However, it is noted that the new test images do not have the finish of the test environment that still was started from Android but this was soon to change.
First Developer Preview of Ubuntu Touch appeared in February. The test version of Ubuntu for touch screen devices include available for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the LG Nexus 4, the Asus Nexus 7 and the Samsung Nexus 10, but eventually the mobile OS easy to port to other on Android running devices .
