In a roundabout way, you can play Game Boy games on your Android device, but how cool would it be if you have the genuine cartridges stabbing you in your phone. This accessory makes it possible.
The company Hyperkin last year showed a new case, which makes it possible to use Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges with an Android device. Many game enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for the case, but it can now be ordered. Hyperkin, the Smart Boy sell for 60 euros and promises that the case comes from 1 December.
When a smartphone is inserted into the accessory, it turns into a full-fledged Game Boy. This eliminates the need to search roms of games and play them back via an emulator, but you cartridges that you have lying around just stabbing behind Android. Smart Boy cartridges supports both the Game Boy Color- as regular Game Boy.
The case is first sold as the ‘Smart Boy Development Kit’, which means that developers get an open source app and firmware to improve the software. In the video above you can see how the Smart Boy works but it is still unclear how well it will work the case to release. The device is a micro-USB connector and Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) is required.
