Review: Google’s first Android tablet Pixel C – NU.nl

It’s suddenly not hip to a tablet just to have a tablet. At the end of 2015 is raining tablets that also have to work as a laptop. The Surface Pro Series Microsoft achieves this for several years with great success, while the iPad Pro from Apple recently a lot less proved handy.

The pixel C Google does its own chip in this bag full keyboard tablets . The device, with a screen size of 10.2 inches, has a nice design, with fairly angular edges and a simple aluminum enclosure.

The Pixel C is thicker than other recent tablets, but light enough comfortable to hold in the hand and to record pad. The included keyboard is nicely finished and uses an innovative design to pair with the tablet

Keyboard

Above the keys is a magnetic strip, where the tablet can be put on. Then the screen can be folded up and set flexible. It is convenient that the viewing angle is adjustable, and the construction is very sturdy. If the tablet is stored, the screen can be reversed and keep the two parts as one sit together

There is no visible charging port, but the magnetic strip ensures that the keyboard is provided current. The design is elegant and practical, but in the beginning it is to get used to the way the two parts are linked together.

The keyboard itself is of excellent quality, with keys that can fairly deep are pressed and enjoyable respond to keystrokes. Because of the 10 inch format are the keys something closer been together than was ideal.

Nice detail of the pixel C is the light strip on the back, which a colored pattern displays during use and also the remaining battery capacity can view

Software

Such a light strip we saw earlier to own Google Chromebook Pixel, an expensive laptop with its own operating system Chrome OS. And the similarity between the two devices does not end there. An analysis of Ars Technica revealed earlier that Google Chrome OS earlier also wanted to turn the Pixel C. Ultimately, however it got there and was not yet selected for Android.

The choice of Chrome OS was afterwards seen been more logical. The bare version of Android that Google provides is not designed for keyboard use and work situations, while Chrome OS that is optimized correctly for

It is not possible to run two windows side by side -. A feature that different other Android manufacturers do have incorporated into their software – and the range of productivity software for Android is not that great anyway

Features

That said, the pixel C is an excellent standalone Android tablet, though he is a prize of 499 euros on the expensive side. For that price you get a crystal clear screen (with a resolution of 2560 by 1800 pixels), a fast Nvidia Tegra X1 chip and 3GB RAM. The pixel C has 32 GB of storage.

The screen quality is good and the maximum brightness is fairly high. However, it is noticeable that rapidly occurs a distortion of the screen when you press on the edges. That’s sloppy, though it comes with normal use not very often.

The Nvidia chip ensures that the pixel C is always running smoothly, and also heavy games can handle with ease. In terms of performance the pixel C is approximately at the level of the Air iPad 2, only the iPad Pro as big outlier which scored better on benchmark tests

In addition, the battery life is fine. Playing a video on an average brightness keeps the tablet over eleven hours out, an excellent score.

On both sides of the tablet are good speakers, and the device has at the top a whopping four microphones. Where are they exactly needed is not clear to me.

Android

By delivering the “bare” Google version of Android is the software of Pixel C orderly and mostly a pleasure to use. The prominent presence of the smart assistant Google Now is a tablet less convenient than a phone, but it sometimes provides more useful information and reading tips on.

It is clear that the Android version is not particularly good is adapted to use tablet. For example, the notification screen is very small and therefore allows much screen space unused. Also, the multitasking screen could better use the space to give you a list of running applications

There is one strange drawback to the Pixel C:. Like many other new smartphones and tablets, the device uses USB type-c in order to recharge. That’s fine, but the cable is attached to an adapter. There is no cable supplied you can stabbing in a computer to transfer files

Conclusion

Despite the innovative design the keyboard price of 169 euros not worth it. To work on the Pixel C to create pleasant, Google had still better Chrome OS may flour feathers.

Despite the pixel C is fine for people who do not want to use their tablet to be productive, but for more traditional tablet tasks watching videos, playing games and browsing. Due to its good specifications and excellent screen, the pixel C can compete including the Galaxy S2 and Tab Z4 Xperia Tablet, which also are about the same
