Looking back on an iconic Android device: Nexus 5 – Android Planet

This time we choose to look back in our series on iconic Android devices for a recent smartphone. Cast in 2013 Nexus 5.

When the Nexus 5 to October 31, 2013 was launched in the Google Play Store, it was not the first time that LG responsible was for the Nexus line. For this, the South Korean company had in fact been successful with the Nexus 4. The new device became available in the colors black and white, but later there would be a red version will be added to the offer.

The Nexus 5 is just a 5-inch screen, but does it with 4.95 inches with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. The screen has thus still just the right size to be comfortably controlled with one hand. Although first only the 16GB version of the smartphone was available, could later be chosen for a version with 32GB storage space.

Robust hardware, soft price

Why is this phone so conspicuous, was due to the combination of great hardware, a bare Android version, and all at a relatively low price. This combination of hardware and software, the Nexus 5 is also very fast. The unit was on Android Planet the price of the best smartphone of 2013, because it is “an excellent reflection of Google’s vision of Android hardware is less important and software is going to shine in the coming years, really.”

That statement appears to be correct in part. In the years after the Nexus 5 know manufacturers are always improving hardware and renew and that we surely turn out to be very nice. But thanks to software updates and better opportunities to work in the cloud, the Nexus 5 is also of today still perfectly usable. Rock hard specs have become less important.

The Nexus 5 was the first Nexus smartphone was sold officially in the Netherlands. The Nexus 5 with 16GB memory went for 399 euros over the counter, while the 32GB version was available for 459 euros. A nice difference to the smartphones of the moment with similar hardware that soon more than 600 euro cost.

Android 4.4 KitKat

When the Nexus 5 came out, it was the first smartphone Android 4.4 KitKat received. This version of Android knew economical with the battery in your smartphone to go, some good came from the mediocre battery in the Nexus 5. Also Google Now was better integrated into the system. KitKat also offered terms desigen an upgrade. For example, blue elements in the interface replacement for gray and white and were the icons for some Google apps more and more playful.

Because the Nexus 5 is running the bare version of Android, the device will also be one of the First, the new versions of the operating system. Thus, the Nexus 5 of KitKat gone through to Lollipop Marshmallow. Later this year, the Nexus 5 will probably just get the update to Android N.

Camera and Battery

There is not only praise for this unit. The Nexus 5 has especially been critical to the aforementioned mediocre battery life and camera. On both fronts is clear cut. Although the variable quality of the camera is annoying, the biggest flaw continues to be the battery of 2300 mAh. It also does not help that the Nexus 5 was plagued by bugs, making the already meager battery quickly emptied. A bug with wifi and camera slurped the unit empty. The bugs were happily resolved quickly by Google, including in Android 5.0 lollipop and later with Android 6.0 Marshmallow
