WhatsApp stop supporting Android 2.1 Eclair and 2.2 Froyo – Android World

WhatsApp has announced to stop support for some older platforms, including Android versions prior to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Support for holding these older platforms by the end of 2016.

WhatsApp exists 7 years

WhatsApp made the announcement on his blog. Earlier this week, WhatsApp was 7 years old and according to the company is a good time to look back to the past. At the time of establishment BlackBerry and Nokia had around 70% market share of smartphones. Less than 25% of devices running on Android or iOS. New units sold currently run 99.5% on one of these two operating systems.

Due to changing market WhatsApp will focus on operating systems used by the vast majority of users. This also support falls away for BlackBerry (also BlackBerry 10), Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60 and Windows Phone 7.1.

Android 2.1 and 2.2

The Android support is coming too not will Android 2.1 Eclair and Android 2.2 Froyo no longer supported unscathed and from the end of the year. Android 2.1 came forward in January 2010. Android 2.2 end came out in 2011. Both versions of Android are years not extradited on new devices, but that does not mean that there are no gears longer in circulation that run on these older Android versions.

dial According to Google’s distribution figures currently 0.1% of the “active Android devices on Android 2.2. There are 1.4 billion Android devices that are used monthly active, and that would mean that 1.4 million Android devices are used which run on the older version.

The way these numbers are calculated, however, ensure that this number fails considerably lower than in reality. The monthly active Android devices (1.4 billion) are in fact devices that have an internet connection and that percentage (0.1%) refers to devices measured during the week which is active the Google Play store opened. This means that many people who use their phones only for example WhatsApp, will not be included in that figure.

Opinion of WhatsApp

WhatsApp indicates that the devices running the clipped systems have been very important to the history of the app, but they do not offer the ability to expand the app in the future. The decision was, according to WhatsApp very difficult, but also the right. In the coming months the company wants more focus on security, such as the verification of secure connections. In addition, there will also be “new possibilities come to stay in touch with people” coming and possible strikes on videobelmogelijkheden in WhatsApp.

The company recommends users to switch to a newer Android device, iPhone or Windows Phone device by the end of 2016 in order to continue using WhatsApp.
