One of the new features under the hood in Android 7.0 Nougat is support for Vulkan, a new way for developers to get their (graphic intensive) apps and 3D games run faster.
Vulkan on Android
Vulkan is the successor of OpenGL, a list of instructions for developers that displays graphically advanced games. The advantage of Vulkan is that it is faster and also can make use of multiple threads, which modern processors with multiple cores can be better used. That means that games, but also the graphical interface of apps or even Android itself, less power consumption, and even graphically intensive can be made.
With the launch of support for Vulkan for Android in the popular Unreal Engine, developers have even more possibilities for more advanced games to Android. The ‘other’ graphics engine for 3D-games, Unity, offers since recently, also support for Vulkan.
The video below shows a demonstration of the possibilities and power of Vulkan on Android. The demonstration, with commentary from the developers, was the beginning of this year for the first time shown at the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S7.
Availability
Currently there are only few handsets that offer support for Vulkan, such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 series, the Nexus 6P, Nexus, 5X and Google Pixel. New Android phones will be fitted with support of Vulkan and some older devices will be a software update to the list of supported devices can be added.
When there is no support for Vulkan in a unit is, will Unreal Engine 4.14 automatically make use of OpenGL ES as an alternative.
