OnePlus OxygenOS is not open source – Android World

The successor to the popular OnePlus One gets no Cyanogen OS, but will be provided with its own Android variant OyxgenOS called. Last week, the development team was presented and a number of questions about the new ROM was answered.

OnePlus and Cyanogen OS

It was from the outset supposed OnePlus in time with its own version of Android would come. The hugely popular OnePlus One was the first phone equipped with a commercial version of the largest custom ROM CyanogenMod, but cooperation between the team of Cyanogen and OnePlus proved fairly stiff.

At the end of last year, the Indian manufacturer Micromax announced a new device that runs on CyanogenOS. The deal was closed with Micromax Cyanogen, appeared to imply that the manufacturer had a monopoly on the use of CyanogenOS in India. This OnePlus bumped against a sore spot, especially since everything was ready for the upcoming release of the OnePlus One in the country. Cyanogen founder and namesake Steve Kondik admitted later that they did not expect exclusivity CyanogenOS for Micromax also would cover the existing OnePlus One.

The development of an own ROM from that moment the highest priority of OnePlus and last week the company announced the new development team.

OxygenOS

OnePlus gives its own Android version of the name OxygenOS. The development team includes developers who have contributed to the (also popular) custom ROM Paranoid Android.

Last week, answered the OnePlus team questions from users and there was requested or the Android version open source would be, to which the answer was ‘no’. Steve Kondik thought it was time to get out to OnePlus:

You can love CM or you can hate us, but we have no plans or taking our toys and going home . The vibrant, active developer community around CM, it’s forks, and as the “anti-CM” ROM is where the action is.

He gives that include at Cyanogen is not going to addressing his “played well” and go home. By this he means that CyanogenMod is open source and that CyanogenMod ROMs and the derivative is the center of the action in the developing world. This confirms OnePlus-founder Carl too: he shows that they were never come this far without Cyanogen. Incidentally, this remark is strange: CyanogenOS itself is not open source: some applications are not released and not made available for CyanogenMod.

By attracting developers Paranoid Android resemble OnePlus enthusiasts reassured. They feared new system that far removed from the standard Android experience. The OnePlus team wants in his own words “standard Android with some extras” offer. It is certainly possible that if certain functions work well in OxygenOS that this be brought to Paranoid Android. The developers may in any case continue to Paranoid Android in their free time.

Availability

OnePlus will shortly release a version of Lollipop OxygenOS, but seeks to ensure that the first version of the ROM is stable enough. It is also important to make an immediate impression with this new Android version.

Cyanogen will still feel the year updates for the OnePlus One issue, which in practice probably comes down that any change to OxygenOS will be voluntary.
