Microsoft vague about Android apps on Windows – Computable

The previously promised, Microsoft tool for Android apps on Windows 10 to run, is in limbo. The software is at least postponed developers and Microsoft refers to ‘other tools’. Previously promised app bridges unfinished.

Microsoft wants to app developers as easy as possible to bring their products to Windows 10. The company is thereby at a disadvantage compared to competitors Apple and Google with their respective app platforms, iOS and Android. The app store Microsoft consists came out since Windows 8 (in 2012), but it struggles with the chicken / egg problem. Developers only go for a platform that many users and users only come if there are many apps already.

Developers, developers, developers

Earlier this year, Microsoft also has launched new initiatives to develop developers so far to get apps for Windows 10 . Earlier, the Windows maker has been offering easy and powerful development tools. The practice is that many developers are focused on iOS and Android, which – just like in the games industry – there is first developed for a specific platform, and then possibly a so-called port is made to another business interesting platform. The portingwerk It should not cost too much trouble, because that translates into man-hours and hence additional costs.

Microsoft has four ‘software bridges’ presented for app developers at its Build developers conference in April. These are Project Westminster (for transferring web apps to native apps for Windows 10), Project Centennial (for porting classic Win32 applications), Project Island Wood (for editing and transferring of iOS apps) and Project Astoria (for emulating Android apps).

recompile versus emulate

This is the first three bridges so to customize apps for Windows 10. In contrast with this, the plan for Android Apps: Microsoft wants to unchanged – or virtually unchanged – let running on the latest version of Windows, including the Mobile variant thereof. Earlier, the pioneer BlackBerry smartphone cases (originally called RIM), the strategy already used its own platform. Though without great success.

Microsoft has since last summer’s test builds (called Technical Preview) of Windows 10 Mobile already has its new Android subsystem, on which the APK files to run Android binaries. For example, Windows 10 would then access the millions of apps already created for Android. Plus the millions of apps for iOS, plus the many web apps on the internet existence, plus the huge catalog of traditional Windows software (made by Microsoft’s Win32-based).

turn?

At least that was the plan until recently. In October, the support for Android apps has been removed from the cast when build (10 549) 10 Windows Mobile. The thought was that this was for performance reasons; subsystem needed more optimization. Mid-November, however, another explanation surfaced there. Astoria project delays and reports have surfaced that the entire plan could sometimes be deleted.

Microsoft officially confirms that its tool for Android Apps postpones Windows. Across Computable Microsoft responds that it is committed to providing developers many options to bring their apps to the Windows platform. The official statement from the United States suggests that this also includes the bridges that are now available for web apps and iOS apps. In addition, Microsoft also mentions explicitly the previously promised bridge for Win32 apps that “soon” come true.

“The Astoria bridge is not finished, but other tools give developers great options,” the general reaction Computable to detailed questions. Microsoft continues this reference to other tools by explaining the technical operation of Project Island Wood. Those iOS bridge enables developers to create a native Windows Universal app that UWP API calls directly from Objective-C, and to UWP- and iOS concepts such as mixing XAML and UIKit and match.

Feedback from developers

The supplier to stress that developers can write applications that run on all devices running Windows 10, or PCs now or tablets, hybrids and smart phones with touch control. “We are grateful for the feedback from the development community and look forward to supporting them in developing apps for Windows 10,” closes the official statement.

This acceptance speech seems to indicate support for now surfaced reports about resistance among developers. For example, Windows Central reports based on anonymous sources that besides technical problems with Astoria was also discontent among developers. Developers who are targeting Windows because it separately, would feel disadvantaged by the emulation of Android apps. Their efforts for the Microsoft platform would not be rewarded by the impending glut of unmodified Android apps. Finally, there was the risk of app piracy, whatever legal ramifications
