409 million Android devices receive no patches – Security.nl

About 409 million Android devices do not receive security updates from Google because they are running an older version of the operating system, as published by the Internet giant (pdf). The Android Security Team regularly releases security updates that are shared with suppliers.

The security updates for Android 4.4.4 and newer. Suppliers can then roll out these updates to their users. According to Google now runs 70.8% of all Android devices in a version that is supported with security updates. In September last year the Internet giant announced that there are now 1.4 billion Android devices. That would mean that 409 million Android devices no longer receive security updates from Google.

Last year Google patches for 173 vulnerabilities, of which 69 were classified as serious. Through these types of vulnerabilities an attacker can take over in the worst case the device. This could, including opening an email, visiting websites or processing media files sent via MMS in different ways.

The update of Android is seen as a major security issue, as manufacturers stop after a certain time supporting devices, so users no longer receive updates. Last March the Consumers lost a court case in which Samsung would oblige smartphones to provide at least 2 years of updates.
