It will not have escaped you that yesterday Apple unveiled the new iPhone. It was with great fanfare and by illuminating countless “innovative” new features. Many of them know Android owners but for years.
We have made an overview with iPhone 6S features that have long been present in Android. Of course there is the other way sometimes played borrows, but the reason we just highlight the following features, because they are not as innovative as Apple wants us to believe.
1. 3D Touch
The most interesting innovation that brings the iPhone 6S is a technology called 3D Apple Touch. It is a variant of Touch Force that we know from the Apple Watch and MacBook, which makes it possible that the screen can distinguish three levels of pressure. In the interface and apps you can gently press to see a preview of a message or link, or press harder to start a function. For example, tap the Facebook app for a context sensitive menu that allows you to quickly share your status. The Maps app can thus quickly mark your current location
A similar feature was Six years ago, already introduced in Android 2.0 Eclair (API level 5). A developer has created even a simple application which demonstrates how Android the pressure exerted on the screen can be measured. The Force Touch demo you can try it out yourself. The Huawei Mate S is incidentally only the first Android smartphone that uses Force Touch (and touting as a unique feature), all we get in the Netherlands and Belgium strangely enough only the model without this feature
Also similar is the Air View function that introduced the Samsung Galaxy S4. This allows you to move through your finger just above the screen display more information, such as the contents of a photo album or a summary of an e-mail. More recent Galaxy devices is Air View but no longer present. Best sin, because the function works well and had the potential to become an important new form of control in Android.
2. Interactive backgrounds
The iPhone 6S also introduces so-called ‘Motion Wallpapers “. Previously, the unit could only display static backgrounds, but now you can also set images as animated and interactive wallpaper. On Android, this has been possible since time immemorial. Like ‘Force Touch’ interactive wallpapers were introduced with Android 2.0 Eclair, so about six years ago.
Android already has about six years interactive wallpapers
The undersigned has never been a fan of interactive wallpapers: they require – especially if you use a cheaper or older smartphone – much of the hardware and battery, and add little to its functionality. On the iPhone 6S you can later called ‘Live Photo’s’ (more on that below) set, but Apple fans are probably not waiting for this kind of innovation.
3. Live Photo’s
Another iPhone 6S feature that was labeled as innovative during the keynote, Live Photo’s. If you use the camera app on the device is recording constant image. Once you shoot a photo, and a half seconds for a half seconds after the photo is also stored. The result is a brief picture that you can play with a 3D Touch.
Live Photo’s a nifty addition, but nothing new. HTC introduced the feature last year with Zoe, a video app can also automatically create short videos of your photos. Nokia was even a year earlier with Cinema Graph, an app that lets you create animated gifs with the push of a button.
4. Filming in 4K
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is Apple’s first phones that can shoot in 4K. Since you obviously of little use if you do not have a set-top box or television that can handle this resolution, but with a view to the future, the addition is nice. Android smartphones offer a lot longer be able to shoot 4K. The Sony Xperia Z2 was one of the first, but also the flagship of Samsung, LG and HTC have a camera that shoots movies in 4K. However, most devices have the limitation that you can get in just a few minutes after the other, otherwise the hardware overheating. Whether this with the iPhone 6S (Plus) is the case is unclear.
5. Voice assistant that is always listening
Siri, the voice assistant of the iPhone 6S (Plus), is soon to activate the voice command “Hey, Siri,” even if the phone is not hanging on the charger. Since Android 4.4, it is possible in a similar way to launch Google Now with the command ‘OK, Google “. However, the function must be turned on in Settings & gt; Speech and works only when the screen is on. Then you can from anywhere in Android quickly start a voice search.
Moreover, the original Motorola Moto has X from 2013 which limit not: the unit can also activate Google Now if it is locked and is not charging. Siri and Google Now, besides the ways to activate them, much more common. But we must admit that the Siri voice assistant, in some cases more personal touch.
6. Selfie Flash
Unlike Android devices like the HTC Desire Eye, Sony Xperia C5 Ultra and Honor 7 has the iPhone 6S (Plus) no flash in the front, if there is something found on the make of selfies in the dark. When you shoot a self-portrait with the 5-megapixel front camera, the display briefly to act as if flash. Astute Android users probably recognize this function of the Google Camera, which has longer has the possibility to use the screen as a flash. The ‘selfie flash silica mode we previously saw on the LG G3, which in any case has many convenient options for shooting portraits.
The Apple event which took place yesterday, was also a feast of recognition for Android lovers. Many iPhone 6S features have already been discussed at Android. Sometimes in a modified form, sometimes obvious ‘stolen’ by competing devices. And while cheating more the rule than the exception in the smartphone market, we consider it as nothing but familiar features are presented as new innovations.
