Thanks to the versatility and relatively low system Android is perfect as a base for a media center. But how do you get your favorite media on such a device?
In the past we have scrutinized more often on Android Planet Android PCs. Devices like the Minix NEO X8-H offer offer a relatively inexpensive way to show all kinds of content on your TV, movies, series and music to apps and games. You have just a few more options than with a Chromecast or Nexus Player, since you have a full version of Android. But without the right apps have little to it.
An app that you should not miss if you get an Android PC or stick in the house, Kodi. This free open source app, which formerly called XBMC, turns any device into a multimedia hub for you. The interface is clearly designed for large screens, so on a smartphone is all what puny. Most users will, however, use the app on a device that is directly connected to the TV.
The interface is optimized for big screens
Is that you even so, you can use the official remote app Kore your smartphone or tablet as a remote control. Kore is also available for free in Google Play and gives you access to all commonly used features of Kodi. Think of playback controls, relevant information about what is playing, the ability to adjust subtitles (and sync) and management options for your media library. You do not have the weather with (wireless) keyboards or mice
.
Add Media
Are you going to work with Kodi, then obviously important to your library of content available in the app. For example, you click on music, then you have the top two options: Music Add-ons ‘and’ Add Music. The first option, add music services Rdio, Pandora and Tidal far (unfortunately there is no Spotify), then you activate the add-on through your login details – if any – to enter
Adding content and add-ons works flawlessly
In video works similar and you have the choice of many well-known and lesser-known services like YouTube, NOS, Dumpert, MTV and Syfy. Once you download them, you can indicate how the add-on displays the content and you can immediately start watching or listening. It may be that foreign channels need a little more time to buffer.
You can stream all sorts of content from the Web, but also play local media. Go to Music & gt; Add music & gt; Browse and you can search the storage of your Android device, or select a network location. This can completely manually, but it is also possible to click on “Browse” to see which network locations are available. Here appear the network folders you’ve shared on your PC or Mac
Extensions and settings
Have you finished adding services and media, then you can get them from any menu (Photos, Videos and Music) away. What Kodi, however, is strong, is that through Programs various plugins available for download, such as a TV guide, Dropbox extension, torrent downloader and an add-on that just keeps track of what you’ve looked all (Trakt). Also through Programs & gt; Android apps launch applications that are already on your Android device.
Virtually every element of Kodi is to match
Another reason that we like to use Kodi , is the adaptability of the app. In any case it is useful to immediately install the Dutch language pack via System & gt; Appearance & gt; Land and Language ‘, but it is also possible to adjust the fonts, interface, sounds, and display of menus and settings. By media type you can also define what information is displayed and how Kodi files too.
So the app can automatically select the proper subtitle in the color and size you have chosen. There are even different levels in the settings (Basic, Standard, Advanced, and Expert) to Hide certain options or correct. You can choose to tweak everything so that your Android media center is fully equipped to your liking
.
And that’s Kodi in a nutshell! The media center app is not just for Android (4.2+), but also for iOS (5.1+), Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. All Kodi downloads can be found on this page. And what are all extensions currently available for the app, you can read here.
