It’s been over ten years since the start-up of Android was acquired by Google, and over the years there has been a lot happening around the mobile operating system. In this new section, we take you to what ‘this week’ in the past happened in Android
in 2005. Google buys Android
took in August 2005 the unknown startup Android Inc. over. The search giant was looking for a way to strengthen its mobile portfolio. Android itself than was perhaps unfamiliar, founder are not. Andy Rubin, the man who also Google Android would lead years, was known as the founder of Danger Inc. With Danger he made include the hugely popular T-Mobile Sidekick, a phone with a QWERTY keyboard.

came the development with the acquisition of Android first smartphone that ran on the operating system in momentum, but it would take more than three years before the first commercial device, the T-Mobile G1, would be available. Andy Rubin has been responsible for Android until March 2013, and the current director of Google, Sundar Pichai, took over from him. Late last year left Rubin at Google to start his own business
In 2010:. Initial patent battle Google and Oracle
This week we talked extensively about the patent battle between Apple and Samsung and that seems to be coming to an end because a key Apple patent is invalid. In addition, we also wrote about the greatest threat that Android and Google hangs over:. The lawsuit between Google and Oracle
This trial began in August 2010, when Oracle Google dragged to court for patent and copyright infringement in Android. Now, five years later, the battle still rages. It began after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle. Sun was the developer of the widely used Java programming language, which Google Android also uses. Google has more or less made their own version of Java, with only a few lines of code from the original Java version of Sun, Oracle and so are used. That has now reached a settlement of a few thousand euros.
The problem with this story, however, is’ m not in the literal copying of the code, but in imitating the names used functions. By using the same structure and names, as Google makes Oracle copyright infringement of Oracle. Initially told a local court that it was not possible to get a copyright on such a structure (API), but this ruling was reversed this year by a higher court.
And how now beyond ? The local court has received the case and to look again at this issue now with the knowledge that it is indeed possible to protect this kind of structures copyright. The court will now have to decide whether Google is guilty of an infraction or that the use in this way falls under fair use
In 2011:. Google buys Motorola Mobility
In August 2011, was a shock through the world Android when Google announced Motorola Mobility have taken over. It went badly for years with the mobile arm of Motorola, so there were often rumors about a takeover, but with no thought quickly on Google.
Google’s decision to take over the business, we should not look at Google’s desire to make my own smartphones, but to protect Android. 2011 was the year that revolved around patent lawsuits involving many Android manufacturers were attacked. Google held itself largely aloof while, but showed this acquisition to stand firm behind Android. Namely Motorola had a huge portfolio of key patents. That is also evident from the huge sum of money that Google had set for the company: $ 12.5 billion. Android manufacturers were happy that Google showed Android to get at:
We welcome the news of the acquisition today. This shows that Google is very keen on defending Android, its partners and the entire ecosystem. –Peter Chou, CEO of HTC
I welcome Google’s commitment to defending Android and its partners. –Bert Nordberg, President & amp; CEO Sony Ericsson
We welcome Google’s commitment to defending Android and its partners – Jong-Seok Park, President & amp; CEO LG
Finally, Google has probably not had much to patents. The principal of the patents are in fact called “essential patents” in which industry standards are defined. Google must provide favorable terms in licensing and use them in lawsuits to incoming patent claims, as in a case against Apple, suppress them was no good idea. Samsung also was not to be happy so dependent on Google, almost all units sold by the company turned (and turn) on Android, as Google anytime could make exclusively for its ‘own’ smartphones. Among other things by putting them into a proprietary operating system (Tizen) Samsung Google put under pressure to sell Motorola Mobility again.
Google has the years that the company had owned Motorola for sure not discarded and For example, stood at the cradle of the popular Moto G and Moto X series. Motorola grew again from company that had long held fast to the Razr, to a hip brand with interesting smartphones. Early last year, Google announced Motorola to sell to the Chinese Lenovo
in 2013. Apps checkout via telephone bill in the Netherlands
The settlement of apps and games in the Google Play Store and before Android Market could long time only with a credit card. There are alternatives to a normal credit card, in the form of a prepaid credit card, but a lot of people did not want to it. KPN was in August 2013 the first Dutch provider checkout apps and games introduced via the telephone bill.
followed later T-Mobile. Vodafone had checkout via the telephone bill introduced earlier internationally, but there it stopped in 2013 without explaining why. T-Mobile introduced last year settling apps via the telephone bill.
In addition to the checkout via the phone bill, there are more alternatives. So you can use a Paypal account and are Play Store Gift Cards. Exactly three years ago, in August 2012, Google Play gift cards were introduced in the United States. Gift Cards are available either on our southern and eastern neighbors, but not officially in the Netherlands. Why are German and Belgian gift cards to be used here and order these cards are from different sites.
