Looking back on an iconic Android device: Motorola Milestone – Android Planet

The name says it all: the Motorola Milestone (Droid in the US) marked six years ago, a milestone in the development of Android and Motorola. But what made this system so special?

With the introduction of the Motorola Milestone critics were impressed. The unit had a physical keyboard alongside a capacitive touchscreen keyboard. The screen was “whopping” 3.7 inches tall and housing 14 millimeters thick. Relatively thin for that time, especially given the addition of the physical keyboard.

Motorola Milestone back

The Droid is the first Android device from Motorola. The smartphone was marketed under the name Milestone in Europe, where from March 2010 in the UK was on sale for 549 euros. In commercials (see below) was mainly the iPhone on the heel taken by highlighting what Milestone does, and the iPhone 3GS could not. Think of multitasking, widgets and the ability to shoot 5 megapixel photos.

Despite the commercial booked the iPhone significantly more successful, because although the Milestone could count on the first weekend 100,000 copies sold, was the iPhone 3GS during the opening weekend more than a million copies were sold.

a refinement of Android

Out of the box turned the Motorola Milestone is the first device on Android 2.0 (Eclair). was promised at launch in 2009 that the smartphone would get the update to Android 2.2 Froyo. This finally came to the displeasure of many until 2011. Nevertheless, Eclair was a welcome refinement of the first Android versions. Especially the Google Maps navigation capabilities were greatly improved and the camera app got more opportunities scenes, flash and zoom. Milestone was also a very robust model. we usually refer to the Nokia 3310 if we want to express how withstand drops a smartphone or not, but Milestone could take some of witnessing the reviews.

however, the unit also had its downsides. Multitouch missing and the physical keyboard turned out not very successful. Since Motorola the device so thin would allow, was chosen flat, not excellent letter which was hampered accurate typing. Nevertheless, the Milestone was the best selling Android device by that time. 21 percent of the then 12.7 million Android users had a Milestone in succession, followed by the HTC Hero (16 percent).

in October 2010 a successor to the Motorola Milestone was released. Milestone 2 was a bit thinner and more powerful than its predecessor, but was quickly for unknown reasons again removed from the shelves.
