Overview: The new features of Android N | NOW – The last … – NU.nl

Multitasking

Who in the past few years, purchased a Samsung phone or tablet, could perhaps already run multiple apps side by side on one screen. This feature is now processed by Google in the core of Android.

On smartphones apps in landscape mode, running side by side, and in portrait mode, one above the other. Basically, this works with all apps unless developers forbid this emphatically. For now it is possible that the apps interface are not calculated on a mode in which only half of the screen is available

Multitasking in Android N (tablet)

in any case limited the usefulness of the feature on smartphones – both apps running side by side actually have too little space. On tablets is multitask a lot more sense, and it is also possible for one app thirds of to take screen while another app gets the rest.

Also useful is a new way to quickly App exchange. By repeatedly pressing the icon for recent apps can be changed quickly, a bit like the alt-tab feature in Windows

Notifications

The messages that you receive apps look in Android N something different. Reports of different people are grouped within an app and logo indicating on which app a notification comes less.

More importantly, you also respond to notifications without opening the associated application. Get example, a message from Google Hangouts app, you can tap back a message from the notification. Developers should incorporate support for this, so in many apps does it not now

Notifications and quick settings

Over the notification list is as in previous Android releases a list of shortcuts that make it possible inter alia to turn on or turn off wiFi, Bluetooth and airplane mode. These icons have become more compact, so they take up less space on the screen if you are not completely unfolding this menu.

Doze

Android Marshmallow Google introduced the ‘doze’ (dormant). Which should ensure that a device by disabling certain functions temporarily, more energy efficient is if it is not used for a while.

Google uses the motion sensor in Android devices for the function. If a device is left idle, then Doze is activated. This is very useful for tablets, but works less well for smartphones which often move when not in use.

Android N is Doze rapidly activated and function must also provide battery savings on smartphones. How does this work in practice will turn out now is not to be tested because the beta version of Android N is still at a very early stage and therefore is still quite unstable.

Settings

the settings screen immediately started to kick. Here is now more text to the user more quickly to provide an overview of important information.

Many classes in the institutions have been given a subhead. It shows among other things how loud the sound is, how long the remaining battery time is and how much space is left on the device. So you need fewer click through to the relevant institution

It is also navigate through the settings menu a little easier made by the addition of a roll ‘burger menu that makes it possible to quickly switch between categories

small changes

There are a few other minor changes. a new data saving mode causes in the background consumes less mobile data unless the user an app give permission

also, it has become possible to adjust the text size in the whole system at one time. Additionally, you can now information for emergencies – for example, a contact or your blood type – to appear on the lock screen. It has also become easier to block incoming calls from a specific number

Interim conclusion

The changes in Android N are significantly smaller than those in Android L -. When the system was visually revised – and in Android M -. then include the privacy settings of apps on the shovel went

in particular, the ability to run apps in split screen will be welcomed by tablet users – for example, owners of Google’s own Pixel C- tablet with keyboard. That device rather just play against because the software was not very suitable for work scenarios.

Furthermore, especially the expansion of the Doze function may be important for owners of Android devices. What function will mean in practice for the battery life of devices remains to be seen, however.

Roll

People who own a Nexus device or pixel C can through the website Google sign up for the beta program for Android N. the update can then be downloaded via the Android device.

That’s not even advisable. Android N is in many places still unstable, and the past has shown that functions in the preview phase of Android may suddenly stop working.

Probably the final version of Android N is rolled out in the fall for at least Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9 and Pixel C.

People with another Android device such as Samsung or HTC, will probably have to wait much longer. Manufacturers of Android smartphones introduce himself further adjustments to the system before an update will be rolled out to users. Updates thus often follow much later, or stay out altogether
