The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 is a relatively expensive Android tablet. Before that, however, you do get a thin, powerful tablet at home, as we discuss in this ZenPad 3S 10 review.
Asus ZenPad 3S 10 review
The ZenPad 3S 10, which is available in the Netherlands starting this month, is a bit of a rarity. With a suggested retail price of 399 euros it is indeed one of the few expensive Android tablets. In recent years appear anyway fewer Android tablets, but on the high end area is scanty supply. Samsung is trying it a few times a year with its Galaxy Tab S series, but no one else seems to dare to compete with Apple’s dominant but pricey iPad.
Asus expects the ZenPad 3S 10 a good alternative to offer the most popular tablet on the market, the iPad Pro 9.7. The new ZenPad also features a large 9.7 inch screen, a thin metal casing, a fingerprint scanner and various other extras. In this ZenPad 3S 10 review, we discuss whether Asus thus the new king delivers among Android tablets.
Thin, narrow but still not very handy
The design of the ZenPad 3S 10 fits at least in the price: the narrow edges and thin metal body feel very premium to. No plastic back or unsightly corners so because all the ZenPad is neat and nicely finished. Although the manufacturer claims that it has a thickness of 5.3 mm one of the thinnest tablet ever, it is only at its thinnest point. In the middle and around the camera, the thickness to just 7 millimeters. Still very low, but not quite enough to break records.
With a weight of 430 grams, it is one of the lightest large tablet of the moment. Asus also the bezel has kept very small. Do you have larger hands, you can still biting hold with one hand the ZenPad 3S 10, even though the tablet features a sharp 9.7-inch screen. It is a design that is very similar to the iPad, but by that slight bezel the ZenPad is nearly a full centimeter narrower. More compact you can not make a tablet of this size and there Asus definitely deserves compliments for.
The tablet is also equipped with a fingerprint scanner, which is built into the home button below the screen. The scanner works well recognized, and the vast majority of the time our fingers directly. Due to the large size of the tablet is not always easy to use the scanner: Keep the Asus with one hand, then what will you have to maneuver to place well your finger
The ZenPad 3S 10 has a smooth fingerprint scanner
Sharp and bright display
The screen has a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels, equivalent to 264 pixels per inch. That is low compared to most high-end smartphones released this year but generally you also is less dense on the screen in a tablet. Of near falls for example, that some app icons are not too sharp, but at a normal distance, the picture is fine.
Even with the brightness is it right: in full sunlight, the screen is bright enough to be able to watch videos on the terrace, while at night can be reduced considerably so you do not have a bright glow in your bedroom. There is also a blue light filter screen provides a yellowish tint, so the screen in a dark environment is calmer before your eyes
Hardware:. Smooth apps faltering Games
Asus the ZenPad is equipped with a new chip from MediaTek, the MT8176. This consists of six cores, four of which are clocked at 1.7GHz and two on 2,1GHz. There is also a spacious 4GB RAM available. As you would expect Android runs very smoothly on this hardware: apps are loaded lightning, switching between different applications without going gehaper and websites are quickly revealed. Netflix, YouTube and other media apps for the ZenPad so no problem
With games, the tablet a little more effort. Graphic-intensive games like GTA: San Andreas and Real Racing 3 seem at times what to stutter or falter. It’s not so much that the games are unplayable, but it is clearly not where ZenPad 3S 10 is built
Software:. Bad combination Android and tablets, with much bloatware
the ZenPad 3S 10 runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), said Asus has made a few adjustments. Some features are useful, such as support for the optional Z Stylus allows you to create (on) drawings. The aforementioned blue light filter is a welcome addition
Less pleasant:. The number of apps that Asus flour evert. Consider for example, are supplied to apps for notes and to-do lists, but Instagram and Asus’ own apps for music, videos and photos. Then there are also all sorts of features that are not directly useful eye, such as applications that claim to improve the sound of your headphones and optimize the performance of your processor. 32GB of storage is also only 23GB available to the user, so rather we had seen that Asus had omitted these applications.
Android tablets and is also quite a while no longer great combination. Developers create applications that barely make good use of larger screens, so you’re on much enlarged mobile apps. The multi-window feature that lets you simultaneously can get into view multiple apps, moreover, is only Android 7.0 Nougat. It is unknown if and when the ZenPad 10 3S getting updates. Customize with such improvements this tablet is not only interesting for the media, but also to work on.
Camera and battery life
Of the 8 megapixel camera on the back of ZenPad you should not expect much. Photos that we shot were quite coarse and grainy and, moreover, quickly overexposed. Many photos additionally had a yellowish tint and a strange haze around the edges of many objects. Now the camera on a tablet is not very important, but for the price Asus for ZenPad requests we had something more expected.
The ZenPad despite its thinness is a reasonable battery capacity of 5900 mAh. Usually we could actively use the tablet for about seven to nine hours before he was back on the charger. Even with a long train ride or flight there’s a lot to see what movies or episodes of TV series before the battery is empty.
Conclusion Asus ZenPad 3S 10 Review
The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 has quite a few pluses, including a sleek design, smooth hardware and a large and bright screen. Extras are also bonus as a fingerprint scanner. With a suggested retail price of 399 euros, however, it is one of the most expensive tablets of the moment and therefore the negatives weigh even heavier. The disappointing camera and abundance of unnecessary bundled apps frustrate. It’s a great tablet, but Asus has virtually no competition, either in turn means that there is no room for improvement.
