Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 800 and 801 not likely to support Android 7.0 Nougat. Therefore, the Nexus 5 and other smartphones with this chip can not be updated.
Snapdragon 800 and 801 Nougat Android Update
Qualcomm, the graphics chip of the Snapdragon 800 and 801 do not continue to support, as claimed by the usually well established LlabTooFeR on Twitter. This means that smartphones with this chip are not updated to Android 7.0 Nougat. According to the source it has to do with the Vulkan-api introducing Google Android 7.0.
Vulkan were games and other graphics-intensive applications need to run a lot smoother on Android Nougat. Unfortunately, the Snapdragon 800 and 801 are not completely compatible with the API, as sources claim that Vulkan applications just less run on devices with this chip. Qualcomm itself has not yet commented on the rumors.
Nexus 5 Android Nougat Update
The Snapdragon 800 and 801 were used in many flagships early 2014. Among others, the LG G3, OnePlus One and Sony Xperia Z3 feature of the chip. Nexus 5, which appeared late 2014, also features the chip. This summer, Google and LG had to endure a lot of complaints when it appeared that the Nexus 5 was no update to Android 7.0, but the debt now seems partly to be at Qualcomm.
That the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and 801 are on the support does not mean that it is completely impossible to release updates for these smartphones. Manufacturers can theoretically self-release new drivers for these chips and so still make Nougat appropriate. But that costs more work, something many manufacturers generally have little appetite in older devices.
An alternative is that enthusiasts themselves started with the release of updates for older smartphones. Unofficial updates will be released frequently outdated models, though they are often less stable. An unofficial Android 7.0 update for the Nexus 5, for example, is already available but still does not quite perfect.
