Android 6.0 Marshmallow Review: bringing desirable new features – Android Planet

Android 6.0 Marshmallow builds on the innovations of Lollipop. The design has not changed dramatically, but Google does have important features implemented where many users for years to desire.

Google’s Android Marshmallow early October made available for Nexus appliances and manufacturers, who can customize the software and then roll out to their smartphones and tablets. Android Planet install Android 6.0 on its Nexus 6 and put the main findings in a row

.

Context-sensitive information with Google Now on Tap

How often you have copied a word on your smartphone, open the mobile browser, then the word stuck in the search bar, and then to press “ok” and to get the results? Often enough, probably. The system of search with a search engine is obsolete and no longer works on mobile devices: Google knows that better than anyone. Therefore, Google Now on Tap introduces a new way to quickly get information about what you see on your screen

One probleemje:. Now on Tap does not work in the Netherlands. You get the feature only when the language of your smartphone or tablet settings to English. That is not a problem in itself, because you can use the Dutch language for your keyboard. So you have the best of both worlds.

By briefly press the home button, Now on Tap is activated. Will appear at the bottom additional information about what you see on your screen at that moment. Read an article about the film The Martian? With you get to see more information at the press of button, such as the rating on IMDB or the ability to view the trailer. In the United States, you can also see where the movie at your local running.

Now on Tap shows with different sections for different topics. The next Martian publishes a section with additional information about actor Matt Damon and his fictional character Mark Watney. You can scroll through different cards with information to view different parts. This is convenient for example to a text message in which a friend says what time the The Martian starts and that you advance as a bite to eat at a restaurant. Now on Tap will show two maps. One for The Martian and one for the restaurant

Managing App-power creations

In Android 6.0 for users, it is also possible to set the permissions by app. At previous Android versions asked a developer to install his application for various permissions. Now it is possible for the user to check the installation per permission or it is needed. Do not you want that Facebook will have access to your contact list? You can prohibit this permission.

In the app list of Android Marshmallow check your permissions and allows each app You may access your location, microphone deny on camera. Developers still have to optimize their apps for the new app-power creations. At time of writing it can revoke permissions still ensure jamming apps or not fully work.

Automatic backup for apps

Another important innovation in Android Marshmallow is the ability to Apps completely to backup. This means that not only the app is stored, but also your settings. Consider your logins on Twitter and Facebook. If you change your smartphone (which also features Android Marshmallow), install the backed-up apps and you can use your settings immediately. There is a back-up to a limit of 25MB and they are stored encrypted on Google servers.

The backup apps every day are created automatically. Through the Google Drive app to reach the settings of the backup function. Here you can also discover which apps are stored online and how much space they occupy. If you delete the app and reinstall it, be – if you wish -. Reset the settings of the first app version

Doze must reduce battery consumption

Doze is a new technology that reduces battery consumption in standby mode drastically. That sounds great, but the effects are only really noticeable on tablets. Doze disable background processes after a specific time, but that only happens when you set a time not used. With a smartphone, this effect will not be very clear. because you have a smartphone usually used a few times per hour.

Doze especially extends the battery life of tablets lot

The tablets however Doze extending battery life dramatically. My Nexus 7 was easily five hours extra standby time off. This is mainly because I really only the Nexus 7 in the evening used to cast films and series or stream Spotify. Doze so certainly prolongs battery life, but people with a smartphone will not really notice this. After the first day of use, the battery life on the Nexus 6 is not significantly better or worse than those of Lollipop.

Fingerprint scanners and USB c

Android Marshmallow has a universal fingerprint scanner-api where manufacturers can use. Previously, manufacturers have developed their own API, now there is a general Android api for the fingerprint scanner, so that app-builders but one api to their app need to add to make logging in, for example users with their fingerprint. This leads to a dramatic increase in applications that support the fingerprint scanner devices with Android Marshmallow, in addition to the array of apps that already support the scanner, such as ING and LastPass.

USB-c enables faster communication between devices, for both power and data. This means that the battery is full speed devices are charged via USB c than other cable connections. Also USB-c can get faster data speeds of 8Gbps (1.25 gigabytes per second). An important feature of the new USB standard is that it is possible to connect devices to quickly load and at the same time to transmit data. With previous USB versions in this also, only the charging process was then very slowly.

Of the improvements you notice nothing if you do not have a USB-C port, but the new Nexus devices are already usb-c delivered. These devices can be a lot faster charge and transfer files, and can do so simultaneously. Additionally, the USB-C connector is symmetrical, so you’m never wrong to put into it.

App -drawer and boot animation

The design of Android Marshmallow is hardly changed. The new Android version looks much the same by Lollipop, which is due to the use of Google’s Material Design. Great visual changes had also been remarkably after major redesign of Lollipop and the new logo of Google. However, the app-drawer has changed: now there you scroll down instead of sideways. To find the top is a toolbar with recently used apps.

The Nexus owners will also notice that the boot animation of Android has been replaced. The boot animation begins with four colored balls; blue, red, and no green. This will suddenly move and the colors move in different ways by the different spheres. This process takes quite long, about twenty seconds before the Android logo appears. If the Android logo is displayed, start the system in seconds.

Cut-paste

Finally, the cut-and-paste section of Android overhauled. For years, cut and paste into Android enormously complicated. The icons change and are not clear, and as icing on the cake shown in the top bar of the app.

cut paste android 6.0

Now, Google displays the new cut-and-paste menu above the word that is selected. Simply having the words ‘cut’ and ‘paste’. Easier they can not make it.

Android Marshmallow is not a major update that a new number (we go from 5.1 to 6.0) is required. However, Google shows that it is listening to the consumer. Android simplifies the cut-and-paste section, for years a thorn in the side of the user, and allows you to set the permissions each app. Also you can finally make automatic backups of apps and app data. These are features that are already quite common in other operating systems, but where Android is still inadequate.

The most important feature, Now on Tap, is not yet available Netherlands and Belgium. And that’s a shame, because this new feature makes Android Marshmallow just so special. Fortunately, Google Now also fairly quickly came to the Netherlands, so the expectation is that Now on Tap not very long overdue. And that’s fine, because the function is in many cases so very handy and saves so much time that you never want to be without.
