Review: Simple Nexus 5X with latest Android version – NU.nl

5X is, as its name suggests, the successor to the Nexus 5, 2013. This smartphone was not perfect – the camera and the battery life was not too good – but the device was popular for its good performance, simple software and reasonably small price of 399 euros.

Two years later seems 5X perhaps a little too much on the Nexus 5. The appearance of the device has not really been progressing, the battery life is indeed improved slightly, but the performance is not perfect this time. That 80 euros to the suggested retail price is added does not help

latest

The Nexus 5X, developed by LG, again has a simple appearance of plastic. There is this time no bulge at the back, making the device is pretty slim. Only the camera protrudes slightly from the body.

The modest weight (136 grams) and concerns the material used to make the Nexus 5X fairly cheap to the touch. The device is not ugly and the build quality is not bad, but the design of the 5X is very boring. There are less than 500 euro much nicer handsets on the market.

At the back of the 5X is a metal ring that surrounds the fingerprint scanner. This works great. The setup is very quick chirp and fingers are then recognized quickly.

The placement at the back is understandable, because the edges can therefore remain thin screen. It is especially in the beginning to look for the scanner, because you can not see it if you put your finger on it trying to explain. However, this went quickly and the scanner also works quite well if you finger only partly falls within the ring.

The screen has a size of 5.2 inches and a full HD resolution. That is fine and there is nothing to criticize in the color reproduction. It’s nice to see that LG did not choose the battery guzzling qHD resolution, which would further contribute little in this format.

Software

The Nexus 5X runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow ). The immediate availability of the latest ‘basic’ version of Android will again be an important reason for many people to consider a Nexus device, and the fact that updates come through will rapidly in the future.

Although Marshmallow visually does not change much with Android, there are a number of important new features in the system. One of the most striking is Now On Tap, an extension of Google’s smart assistant Now.

The new feature, which only works if the smartphone on the English language has been set, scans by a long press on the home button the text on your screen and displays relevant information. If people in a chat conversation for example, call a restaurant or movie appears here a simple overview and you can quickly click through to search results.

Now On Tap shelf saves unfortunately quite often wrong. If it works, then it is a very nice addition, but the results are still too unreliable

Privacy

Android Marshmallow finally gives users a way to determine what data apps can see. Previously, you had to install apps from Google Play at one time to determine what information an app might use, such as location, photos or calendar.

Now that you give advance no permissions, but ask apps to a permission if they need it. Whatsapp example only wants access to your camera if you are going to send a picture to someone.

The system, which is similar to the way iOS for years dealing with app permissions, is a major step forward. Apps that for unclear reasons consent to all sorts of questions data can be called back simply, without the whole app needs to be deleted

Performance and picture quality

The software works so fine and beautiful appearance, introduced remains intact with Android 5.0. Unfortunately, the 5X delivers sometimes somewhat disappointing performance, especially when there is something wrong with the camera needs to be done.

The smartphone uses a Snapdragon 808 chip, a good processor that previously included the LG G4 aanstuurde . There is 2 GB of RAM; it is not extremely high, but should do just fine in most situations. In benchmark tests, the Nexus 5X is also pretty good off the bus, just below the more expensive flagships which earlier this year

Still, there were occasional hitches, often inexplicable moments. There often occurs a delay in the use of the camera. The HDR mode of the 12 megapixel camera usually make great photos, but is sometimes so slow in using it is not easy for a quick shoot a snapshot.

It frequently happened that the shutter button completely was blocked because HDR images are to be processed in the background. Compared with the almost imperceptible operation of the HDR mode on devices such as the Galaxy S6 is a little embarrassment.

However, the picture quality it is excellent. Who has patience, is also in the dark usually make good pictures. The included camera app is very simple and hardly provides options, but the automatic settings do their job well. Videos can be created in 4K quality and in slow motion

Battery life

The battery of the Nexus 5 with a capacity of 2700 mAh are not very big, but in normal use’ll get there through the day. Only on days of heavy use (over 2.5 hours of screen time), he was in between for a little while the charger.

The charging of the Nexus 5X is fortunately fairly quickly, via the USB-C port on the bottom. It’s just awkward that you are not old micro USB cables can be used, but USB c appears on more and more devices and would presumably be prevalent within a year.

If not using the Nexus 5X, Doze makes the feature of Android 6.0 for a very low battery consumption. Doze reduces energy consumption significantly, but only if the phone for several hours not moving.

Here you have daytime therefore benefit from the smartphone unused lying on a table, but is especially useful when you him at night do not have the charger. Then the 5X consumed in one night just a few percent of the battery

Conclusion

The Nexus 5X is a good phone, especially in terms of design somewhat disappointing. With a price of 479 euros for a 16 GB version (529 euros for 32 GB) we expected something a little nicer. The same applies to the specifications; competition on the Android market is fierce and the intern more impressive Galaxy S6 is available for about the same price as the 5X.

The Nexus device is therefore particularly suitable for people who like to use the latest Android version and often somewhat clumsy to circumvent Android versions from other manufacturers
