This was reported by Android Police. iOS users could already longer automatically upload their backups to the cloud, but also get the Android version the possibility.
Whatsapp years create a local backup, but which was somewhat limited in functionality as the backup had to be removed manually from the phone. If the user had not done that, then lost the phone, the chat history was lost.
With the new upload WhatsApp chat history, pictures, voice messages, and even videos to Google Drive account of the user. The new feature is currently being rolled out and is easy to activate. If the user Whatsapp are updating, upon starting the app displays a one-time window in which the automatic upload is activated.
The Google Drive functionality previously also sometimes added to Whatsapp, but disappeared later . The function now appears to be finally back
